PANAJI: In a landmark announcement, Mario Pimenta, Festival Director of the Gaur International Film Festival (GIF Festival), unveiled plans for Goa’s first-ever film festival prioritizing Goan films, while also welcoming national and international cinematic works. Scheduled to debut in 2025, the festival aims to become a cornerstone for filmmakers and cinephiles alike, celebrating creativity and storytelling on a global stage.
Addressing the media, Mr. Pimenta shared the vision behind the festival, emphasizing its dedication to showcasing Goa’s rich cultural heritage and creative talent. “The Gaur International Film Festival is named after Goa’s state animal, the gaur, symbolizing strength, perseverance, and hard work. This resonates deeply with our mission to build a platform that elevates Goan voices while embracing the diversity of cinema worldwide,” he said.
The festival also aims to honor Goa’s historic contributions to media. “As the home of Asia’s first printing press, Goa has played a pivotal role in shaping modern journalism. Through this festival, we wish to pay homage to this legacy while forging a path for the next generation of storytellers,” Mr. Pimenta added.
Promising to be an inclusive and community-friendly event,The Gaur International Film Festival will ensure a safe and respectful experience for all attendees. Security arrangements will be non-intrusive, and the festival will not disrupt the daily lives of the public. Moreover, entry to the festival will be free for all Goans, making it accessible to the local community.
At present, the festival is in its developmental phase. Organizers are actively seeking sponsors, participants, delegates, and collaborators to bring this vision to life. While initial prizes may be modest, the festival team is committed to growing into an event that offers prestigious awards and international recognition in the years to come.
The official dates for the festival will be announced once preparations are finalized. “This is just the beginning of an incredible journey,” Mr. Pimenta concluded, inviting everyone to join hands in making the Gaur International Film Festival a landmark event for Goa and the global film community.
