PANAJI: Ports Minister Micheal Lobo has informed that the state government is seeking comments from stakeholders on the Indian Ports Bill, which has been drafted by Central Government and forwarded to coastal States for consultation.
“We are aware that a new Indian Ports Bill has been drafted by Central Government and sent to coastal States for consultation. Presently the government is seeking comments from stakeholders,” said Lobo
He further said that the government is aware that the proposed law contains several provisions that directly and indirectly dilute and impinge on states’ powers concerning minor ports and enable their privatization.
He said that the state Government has communicated its views to the Centre on the draft law. The Captain of the Ports department is presently seeking comments from stakeholders. The government has already spoken to the Centre to make necessary changes in the draft legislation.
“The state has proposed various changes to be incorporated in the draft Indian ports bill, which include changes in the composition of the Maritime State Development Council and also powers and functions of the said council,” he said.
