PANAJI: In order to protect the interests of the Goan fishing community, the Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) has demanded that Sharmila Monteiro, the state’s director of fisheries, quit. According to the group, Monteiro is supporting laws that will hurt the local fishing industry.
Olencio Simoes of GRE stated that Monteiro is in favor of fishing boats using big generator sets, with a capacity ranging from 60 to 150 kVA. According to the organization, these activities promote damaging fishing techniques that have the potential to completely destroy the local fishing community.
The case is presently being heard by the High Court, which is considering the subject. “The matter is sub judice, and as it is being heard by the High Court, I cannot comment further,” Sharmila Monteiro said in answer to a question.
The Director was served with a formal memorandum by the GRE, which demanded her resignation and accused her of supporting measures that would negatively impact Goa’s traditional fishing techniques.
