CANACONA: The Goa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (GTDC) has issued a work order for the beautification and renovation of the historic Shree Mallikarjun Temple at Avem-Khotigao in Canacona, marking a significant step towards upgrading one of South Goa’s most prominent religious sites.
According to the work order issued on July 3, GTDC has awarded the contract to Allabaksh Mulla for a project valued at ₹5.42 crore. The contractor has been directed to complete the work within 240 days, with the project scheduled to commence in October 2026 and conclude by May 28, 2027.
The project aims to improve temple infrastructure and enhance facilities for devotees and visitors while preserving the site’s cultural and religious significance.
Welcoming the development, the office of Art and Culture Minister and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar described the issuance of the work order as a major milestone for the constituency and a long-awaited fulfilment of public aspirations.
In a statement, Tawadkar said the project would help preserve and enhance one of Canacona’s most revered temples while improving the overall experience for the thousands of devotees who visit the shrine annually.
“It is with immense joy and pride that we share the news that the official work order for the beautification and renovation of Shree Mallikarjun Temple, Avem-Khotigao, has been issued by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation,” the statement said.
Tawadkar expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte and GTDC Chairman Kedar Naik for facilitating the project.
He said the renovation and beautification works would not only strengthen the region’s spiritual and cultural heritage but also contribute to tourism growth, generate local employment opportunities and support the overall development of the area.
Tawadkar appealed to the public to support the initiative and expressed hope for the timely and successful completion of the project, describing it as a new chapter in the history of the Shree Mallikarjun Temple.
