VALPOI:
In what could be a major scam in the making, the Goa Police stationed at the Keri check-post has thrown the North Goa Collector’s order of banning heavy vehicles on Chorla ghat to the dustbin.
The police and the taluka officers have failed to understand that the Collector is the district’s head; this gives a suspicion of a major scam on the border.
A year ago, the North Goa District Collector had ordered a ban on heavy traffic from the Chorla area between Goa and Belgaum.
However, the order issues have been put in the dustbin.
Citizens allege that large-scale financial transactions have been taking place over the past year as hundreds of trucks pass through the check post.
Not just corruption, the heavy vehicles are putting the lives of other commuters also at risk.
Many citizens of Goa are going to Belgaum for various types of shopping. This way
Over the last three years, heavy traffic has increased on this route as the Anmod Ghat, through Mollem, is also under repair. The truckers take this route as it is a shortcut of almost 50 kilometres.
Taking note of this, the district collector had ordered a complete ban on heavy traffic from this area.
If you stand at the border for an hour, you will find dozens of 14-wheeler trucks passing through without any checking.
Sources said the traffic multiplies by four to five times at night.
The citizens of this area have repeatedly demanded that the traffic in this area should be stopped altogether, but their demands are not looked into.
An officer on condition of anonymity said that there is not enough s[pace for the vehicles to take U-turns and send back.
“If they are asked to take a u-turn, it created a huge traffic jam,” the officer said.
Locals said the police are collecting a huge amount of money for letting the vehicles in and out.
“There is enough space for vehicles to turn if they want to but the police do not want the vehicles to turn and instead charge a fee,” said the local.
