New Delhi: India have received a major boost ahead of the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan, with star all-rounder Hardik Pandya being declared fit after successfully completing his rehabilitation programme at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Pandya had missed four matches for the Mumbai Indians during IPL 2026 due to back spasms, raising concerns over his availability for the 50-over series. Although he returned for the franchise’s final league match, his place in the national squad remained subject to medical clearance.
Following an extensive fitness assessment, the 32-year-old has now been cleared for selection. Reports indicate that Pandya underwent a rigorous rehabilitation process after reporting to the Centre of Excellence on June 2. During the assessment period, he participated in multiple match simulations and successfully completed his full bowling workload, including ten-over spells, without any signs of discomfort.
The successful completion of the programme has reassured team management about his readiness for international cricket, providing India with a crucial all-round option ahead of the three-match ODI series beginning in Dharamsala.
It remains uncertain whether Pandya will join the squad during its preparatory camp in Chandigarh or travel directly to Dharamsala before the opening match. However, his clearance significantly strengthens India’s balance, given his ability to contribute with both bat and ball.
India have also received encouraging news regarding former captain Rohit Sharma, who had been undergoing assessment for the hamstring injury that sidelined him for five matches during IPL 2026. While initial reports suggested that he was awaiting final clearance, subsequent updates indicate that the veteran opener has also successfully completed his fitness evaluation and is expected to be available for the Afghanistan series.
Rohit returned to action during the latter stages of the IPL season, with his franchise expressing confidence in his recovery. Nevertheless, the BCCI opted for an independent assessment before confirming his availability for national duty.
The return of both Pandya and Rohit comes as a significant boost for India ahead of the ODI assignment. Their experience and leadership will be valuable assets as the team prepares to face Afghanistan and continue building momentum in the 50-over format.
