PANAJI: The Bombay High Court at Goa has ordered the premature release of three life convicts in the 2006 Mandar Surlakar murder case. The convicts—Rohan Pai Dhungat, Ryan Pinto and Shankar Tiwari—had approached the High Court seeking their early release after serving the required period of imprisonment.
The High Court had also heard a connected petition filed by the victim’s father, Deepak Surlakar, opposing the premature release of the three convicts.
During the hearing, counsel appearing for the convicts submitted receipts showing that each of them had deposited ₹40,000 towards the fines imposed at the time of their conviction. The deposits were made after the High Court had observed that the fines awarded during the original trial had not been paid and directed the convicts to comply before their pleas for premature release could be considered.
After taking the compliance on record, the High Court has now ordered the premature release of Rohan Pai Dhungat, Ryan Pinto and Shankar Tiwari in the 2006 Mandar Surlakar murder case. The connected petition filed by the victim’s father challenging their release was also considered during the proceedings.
