PANAJI: With samples from up to 16 patients tracked by the state’s genome sequencing lab, the KP.1 and KP.2 sub-variants which are thought to be the reason behind the spike in Covid cases in Singapore have found their way to Goa.
Dr. A K Prakash Suryawanshi, the state epidemiologist, stated that there is no need for concern as all 16 patients have recuperated at home.
324 cases of coronavirus infection with the KP.1 and KP.2 subvariants have been reported nationally in India thus far. According to him, of the 16 cases reported in Goa, 4 had the KP.1 strain and 12 had the KP.2 variant.
The increase in cases reported in Singapore recently was caused by both of these subtypes. However, Dr. Suryawanshi noted that even hospitalization is not necessary because these variants do not have severe symptoms or negatively impact the patient’s health. With 290 cases, Maharashtra has had the most KP.2 cases.
Suryawanshi claims that Goa typically sees just one or two cases per day, and that when 10 to 12 patients are found, samples are sent for genome sequencing.
