New Delhi: Ayush Shetty produced one of the biggest wins of his young career by defeating world No. 1 and defending champion Shi Yu Qi in a thrilling three game battle at the BWF World Championships.
The 21 year old Indian entered the contest having lost all three of his previous meetings against the Chinese star. However, this time Shetty was ready for the challenge and showed remarkable composure to overcome his highly rated opponent in a contest that lasted one hour and 13 minutes.
Shetty appeared to be in control of the deciding game after opening up a 17 7 lead. But Shi responded strongly and dramatically turned the momentum around. The Chinese shuttler reduced the deficit to 15 19 before moving within a single point at 19 20, leaving the Indian camp and supporters extremely tense.
The challenge became even tougher for Shetty after he suffered an injury while leading 17 9. He required treatment on court but returned to complete the contest, displaying tremendous determination as the match entered its decisive phase.
With the score delicately poised, Shetty kept his composure and sealed the victory with a precise forehand shot from near the net into the back of Shi’s court. The win ended Shi’s title defence and gave Shetty a landmark victory against one of the strongest players in the world.
Shetty will next face Sri Lanka’s Dumindu Abeywickrama, against whom he previously lost in 2023. Despite his breakthrough victory, the young Indian is refusing to get carried away and remains focused on progressing further in the tournament.
The stunning performance has made Shetty one of the major talking points of the World Championships, with his fighting spirit and fearless badminton raising hopes of a memorable campaign for India.
