New Delhi: Rekha Gupta launched a sharp attack on Arvind Kejriwal after he wrote to a High Court judge raising concerns about the fairness of proceedings and chose not to appear in court in connection with the alleged excise policy case.
Gupta criticised Kejriwal’s approach, stating that his actions suggest he is attempting to assume multiple roles simultaneously, questioning the judicial process while avoiding participation in it. She said that raising doubts about a judge and the conduct of hearings undermines the credibility of the legal system and leaves little room for institutional processes.
The controversy was triggered after Kejriwal addressed a letter to the court, expressing apprehensions about the proceedings and seeking a change of forum. He also described his stance publicly as a form of protest, drawing parallels with satyagraha. His absence from the scheduled court appearance intensified the political debate surrounding the case.
Reacting strongly, Gupta said that such actions raise serious concerns, particularly when allegations are already under legal scrutiny. She emphasised that any claims of innocence should be established through due process in court rather than through public statements or symbolic protest.
She also took exception to comparisons made with historical figures, calling such references inappropriate in the current context. According to her, invoking such parallels detracts from the seriousness of the legal matter and shifts focus away from judicial accountability.
Reiterating her position, Gupta stressed that the judiciary remains the proper forum to determine the truth. She added that repeatedly questioning legal institutions reflects a disregard for established processes, and insisted that the matter should be resolved strictly within the framework of law.
