New Delhi: Rohit Sharma delivered a captain’s knock under immense pressure, smashing a magnificent 138 off 110 balls at Lord’s to answer his critics and firmly dismiss speculation surrounding his ODI future. However, his heroic effort was not enough to prevent India from suffering a 27 run defeat against England, who clinched the three match ODI series 2-1.
Chasing a daunting target of 388, India finished on 360 for 7, with Rohit leading the fightback alongside Shubman Gill (77) and Virat Kohli (74). Rohit’s innings, featuring 17 boundaries and five sixes, was his 34th ODI century and the first by an Indian batter at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground.
The skipper shared crucial partnerships of 147 runs with Gill and 113 runs with Kohli, keeping India’s hopes alive before England struck back in the closing stages. Sam Curran proved decisive with key wickets, while England held their nerve to seal the victory.
Earlier, England piled up 387, powered by a career best 142 from Ben Duckett and a fluent 91 by Jacob Bethell. Joe Root remained unbeaten on 74, while Jos Buttler’s explosive 41 off just 13 balls helped England add vital runs in the final overs. India’s inexperienced pace attack struggled in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, allowing England to dominate with the bat.
Following the match, Rohit brushed aside reports suggesting he was considering retirement from international cricket. Speaking after the series, the veteran opener said outside speculation had never affected him and insisted his only focus was performing for India.
“My job is with the bat. I have always been told to represent my country and contribute to the team’s success. The outside noise has always been there and it will remain. It doesn’t matter to me,” Rohit said.
He added that criticism was part of international cricket, saying, “If there is no noise, there is no fun.”
The century not only reaffirmed Rohit’s class but also strengthened his position ahead of India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with the experienced opener making it clear that he remains fully committed to representing the country.
