PANAJI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued an orange alert for the state from June 23 to 24.
“Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and winds gusting to 40-50 kmph are very likely at isolated places over North Goa and South Goa districts of the State. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over North Goa and South Goa districts of the state on June 20 -24 2024,” the IMD said.
A cyclonic circulation over the Northeast Arabian Sea adjacent to Saurashtra, combined with a north-south trough extending to the East Central Arabian Sea off the south Maharashtra coast, and an east-west trough from Goa to south Coastal Andhra Pradesh, are expected to enhance monsoon activity.
Additionally, another cyclonic circulation lies over the Southeast Arabian Sea off the Kerala coast in the lower tropospheric levels.
According to IMD, these systems will result in scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over Konkan-Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada during the next five days.
The IMD has also predicted isolated heavy rainfall in Konkan-Goa and the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra from June 18-22, with the intensity expected to increase in the catchment areas of Konkan on June 21-22.
