PANAJI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Goa, warning of unstable weather conditions expected to persist until May 18.
As the southwest monsoon begins its advance into southern India and the Bay of Bengal, Goa is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall, with occasional heavy showers, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h.
The IMD has urged residents to remain alert, particularly in low-lying areas susceptible to waterlogging.
People are advised to avoid staying in structurally vulnerable buildings during periods of adverse weather and to adhere to local traffic and weather advisories.
Special advisories have also been issued for farmers and livestock owners. Authorities recommend draining excess water from agricultural fields, safely storing harvested crops, and ensuring adequate shelter and food for animals during periods of heavy rain.
The IMD has also cautioned vulnerable groups—such as infants, senior citizens, and individuals with chronic health conditions—to take additional precautions due to the combination of moderate heat and rising humidity levels.
As part of general safety measures, the public is advised to wear weather-appropriate clothing and ensure access to clean drinking water for both humans and animals throughout the alert period.
