New Delhi: Amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, the Indian government has confirmed that an Indian seafarer aboard a vessel detained by Iran is safe. The development follows a series of incidents involving foreign-flagged commercial ships in the region.
According to officials, Iranian forces took control of two container vessels, including the Epaminondas and the Francesca, while a third ship, Euphoria, came under fire but continued its journey. Of the vessels involved, only one Indian national was on board the Epaminondas, while none were present on Francesca. Authorities confirmed that the Indian crew member is safe.
In total, 22 Indian seafarers were reported to be on two of the three affected ships. The Euphoria, which was sailing under a Panama flag, carried 21 Indian crew members and was located on the eastern side of the strait, indicating it had moved out of immediate danger. Officials reassured that all Indian nationals across the vessels are safe and in contact with relevant authorities.
The Epaminondas and Francesca were positioned on the western side of the Persian Gulf, an area under Iranian control, suggesting they were in custody following the incident. The situation unfolded after Iranian forces intercepted vessels allegedly violating transit regulations or ignoring warnings.
The escalation is linked to broader geopolitical tensions, with Iran’s actions seen as a response to recent moves by the United States, including the seizure of an Iranian vessel in the Sea of Oman. Iranian authorities have accused the US of violating a ceasefire and interfering with maritime navigation.
The situation has drawn international attention due to the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and trade shipments. While tensions remain high, Indian officials continue to monitor developments closely, prioritising the safety and well-being of its seafarers in the region.
