New Delhi: In a groundbreaking leap towards transforming the transportation landscape, India is on the cusp of developing the world’s longest Hyperloop tube at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. This ambitious project, spearheaded by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, promises to revolutionize travel by harnessing indigenous technologies to achieve breathtaking speeds of over 1,000 km/h. The Minister’s recent visit to the IIT Madras facility underscored India’s commitment to pioneering high-speed transportation, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s technological journey.
The Hyperloop tube at IIT Madras currently stands as the longest in Asia, measuring an impressive 410 meters, and is poised to become the world’s longest soon. During his visit on March 15, 2025, Minister Vaishnaw witnessed a live demonstration of the facility, expressing optimism about India’s future in high-speed transportation. The entire testing system for the Hyperloop has been developed using indigenous technologies, a testament to India’s growing prowess in innovation.
The Railway Ministry has provided substantial financial and technical support for the project, further solidifying its potential for success. Additionally, the electronics technology for the Hyperloop will be developed at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, leveraging the expertise of highly skilled engineers who have successfully developed electronic systems for the Vande Bharat high-speed trains.
Initial tests have yielded promising results, indicating that India is on track to be ready for Hyperloop transportation soon. This development aligns with India’s broader advancements in data science, artificial intelligence, and semiconductors, areas where the nation is rapidly gaining momentum. Minister Vaishnaw also highlighted these achievements during his visit to IIT Chennai, emphasizing the pivotal role of young innovators in propelling India towards becoming a leading nation in all sectors.
