The Indian duo posted a 21-14, 22-20 win over Polina Buhrova and Yevheniia Kantemyr of Ukraine in the second round of the women’s doubles event on Wednesday.
Jakarta: India’s Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand continued their impressive run at the Indonesia Open 2025, advancing to the next round of the women’s doubles event with a straight-game victory on Wednesday.
The Indian pair overcame Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova and Yevheniia Kantemyr 21-14, 22-20 in a 32-minute clash at the iconic Istora Senayan Stadium in Jakarta. Their win secured a place in the Round of 16 and kept India’s hopes alive in the women’s doubles category.
In mixed doubles, the Indian duo of Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath came back from a game down to register a gritty 15-21, 21-16, 21-17 victory in 45 minutes on Court 3. However, it was a day of mixed fortunes for India as three other mixed doubles pairs crashed out of the tournament.
Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto delivered a spirited performance but eventually went down fighting to second-seeded Malaysians Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei 11-21, 21-16, 14-21 in a closely contested 59-minute match. Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh were outplayed by Denmark’s Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch, losing 15-21, 9-21 in their Round of 32 encounter.
In another mixed doubles clash, Rohan Kapoor and Gadde Ruthvika Shivani were defeated 11-21, 9-21 by Japan’s Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara in just 33 minutes.
India’s men’s singles challenge was further dented as Kiran George bowed out after losing 20-22, 9-21 to former world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore. This follows the earlier first-round exits of top Indian shuttlers Lakshya Sen and H.S. Prannoy on Tuesday.
Despite the setbacks, Indian hopes remain alive with PV Sindhu set to face fifth-seeded Thai player Pornpawee Chochuwong in the women’s singles Round of 16 on Thursday. Meanwhile, the men’s doubles top seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will be up against Denmark’s Rasmus Kjaer and Frederik Sogaard in a crucial Round of 16 match.
