Imphal: At the 5th convocation ceremony of the Central Agricultural University (CAU) in Imphal, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman V. Narayanan emphasized the crucial role of space technology in safeguarding India’s security. He revealed that at least 10 satellites are operating continuously, working round-the-clock to monitor strategic locations and ensure the safety of the nation.
“At least 10 satellites are continuously working to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of the country,” said Narayanan. He pointed out the importance of satellite and drone technology in monitoring India’s vast borders, including its 7,000 km coastline and the northern border regions, which are vital for national security.
“In order to secure our country, we must utilize satellite technology,” he continued. “Without the use of satellites and drones, it would be impossible to achieve this level of surveillance.”
The statement comes amid heightened tensions along India’s northern and western borders. In recent days, areas near Jammu and Kashmir have been affected by cross-border firing, heavy shelling, and drone attacks from Pakistan. However, the situation along the International Border (IB) remained calm on the night of May 11–12, marking a rare period of peace after several days of unrest.
According to the Indian Army, there were no violations of the ceasefire agreement during the night. This calm period followed a series of cross-border skirmishes and heavy artillery exchanges, triggered by Operation Sindoor, which India launched on May 7 in retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Operation Sindoor targeted multiple terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), neutralizing key terror infrastructure. The Indian Air Force’s successful strikes on nine terror bases caused significant damage to Pakistan’s military capabilities. In return, Pakistan attempted to disrupt peace with drone attacks and artillery shelling along the borders in Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Gujarat. However, these were largely neutralized by India’s air defence systems.
In a joint press conference held on Sunday, senior military officials provided updates on the situation. Lieutenant General Rajeev Ghai (Director General Military Operations), Vice Admiral A.N. Pramod (Director General Naval Operations), and Air Marshal A.K. Bharti (Director General Air Operations) discussed the outcomes of Operation Sindoor and ongoing efforts to manage cross-border tensions.
Lt. Gen. Ghai shared details of his communication with Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) on May 10, which led to a temporary cessation of hostilities. The agreement was meant to halt cross-border firing and air intrusions from both sides. However, Lt. Gen. Ghai expressed disappointment that Pakistan violated this arrangement just hours after the agreement was reached, with renewed cross-border firing and drone incursions along the Line of Control (LoC).
“The Pakistan Army violated the understanding after only a couple of hours,” Lt. Gen. Ghai said. “We responded robustly to these violations.”
The Indian Armed Forces’ swift response to Pakistan’s provocations underscores India’s readiness to defend its borders and retaliate if necessary. The operation is seen as a symbol of India’s resolve to confront terrorism and defend its territorial integrity.
