Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sharply criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent roadside ‘jhalmuri’ stop during an election campaign, calling the episode “scripted drama” and questioning its authenticity.
Addressing a public rally, Banerjee raised doubts about the spontaneity of the Prime Minister’s visit to a snack stall in Jhargram, pointing to the presence of cameras at the location. She alleged that the entire incident appeared pre planned and was staged for public attention during the ongoing election campaign.
The remarks came after Modi made an unscheduled stop at a roadside vendor while campaigning on Sunday. He interacted with the shopkeeper, asked about the price of jhalmuri, and requested it to be prepared fresh. The Prime Minister paid for the snack and shared it with children present at the spot, while also engaging briefly with local residents.
Banerjee also criticised the broader campaign approach, accusing the opposition of using orchestrated moments to influence voters. She further alleged attempts to manipulate the electoral process, including claims related to the use of central forces and electronic voting machines, while asserting that her party would resist any such efforts.
In addition, she accused political rivals of trying to create divisions over the issue of women’s reservation, stating that her party has consistently supported greater representation for women without relying on legislative measures.
Meanwhile, during his campaign rally in Jhargram, Modi launched a strong attack on the ruling party, accusing it of neglecting tribal communities and failing to support women’s welfare. The exchange reflects the intensifying political contest in the state as campaigning continues ahead of polling.
The incident has added a fresh dimension to the election narrative, with both sides using it to reinforce their respective political messaging.
