CANACONA: Stating it is only because journalists point out mistakes and shortcomings, CMC Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaunkar said, politicians, authorities and others concerned gets the opportunity to improve themselves, bring out healthy developments, makes them stay awake and understand their surroundings.
“Journalists must compulsorily show mistakes and shortcomings. While as we say some journalists are doing negative journalism, these very journalists by their negative reportage bring out positive works for the benefit and betterment of the society,” Naikgaunkar was speaking at the Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak Punyathiti (Tilak’s Anniversary), celebrated as Patrakar Din, by Canacona Patrakar Sangh on Tuesday.

Journalists should fall prey to politicians’ threats and should report freely, and honest journalists will get appreciation, support and security from the public. Previously, politicians and bureaucracy used to be equally wary of news reports, fearing journalists will expose them as the public used to take serious note of news reports they were reading about. Today, the general public and government are no longer not much concerned about news and reporters, at least not the way previously used to be. We need to think about it seriously.’
Poinguinim Panchayat Dy Sarpanch and Shradhanand Dnyanan Prabhodini Chairman Sunil Paingankar speaking as guest of honour said that today the Canacona Journalist Association has set a new example to the society by felicitating not only the Headmistress of the special children’s school but also all the teaching and non-teaching staff of the special children’s school as well as the special children themselves.
‘”Journalism is not that easy. When the news is printed in the newspaper, we used to come to know about that news. But for that news, a reporter has to work hard. However, nowadays with the onset of social media, news reporting has become easier, but as a fourth pillar of democracy, vigilant journalism still plays a major role in society, said Retd Teacher and former Journalist Manuel Fernandes.
Ram Warak (an employee with the Water Supply department), Suresh Warik (an employee of the Electricity department), Gauresh Bhaireli (an employee of Animal Husbandry department), Purna Phaldesai e Bhagat (A Senior Officer of Town and Country Planning) and members of Canacona Patrakar Sangh Devidas Gaonkar and Narayan, besides, daughter of journalist Sanjay Komarpant, Samruddhi Komarpant, for scoring 94% marks at SSC examination were felicitated and honoured on the day.
Earlier a group of special children of Lok Vishwas Pratrhisthan, Mokhard presented a welcome song, while LVPS Headmistress Athiti Phalgaonkar, Dilip Kenkre, Purna Phaldessai Bhagat also spoke on the occasion.
CPS President Babesh Borkar welcomed, Senior Journalist Ajit Poinginkar and gave a brief of activities and history of the Canacona Patrakar Sangh.
The program was moderated by Devidas Gaonkar and Sanjay Komarpant, while Bernard Fernandes proposed a vote of thanks.
