PANAJI: Minister for Art and Culture, Govind Gaude has shrugged off the controversy over the Kala Academy false ceiling by placing the blame on the PWD.
He stated that Kala Academy has not yet been turned over to us and that the work is being completed by the PWD.
He went on to say that engineers from Kala Academy had occasionally written to the PWD pointing out different difficulties.
“PWD has a chain of engineers that oversees the renovation work, ranging from Principal Engineer to JE. JE Kala Academy is not involved in the construction,” said Gaude
In December 2023, the mirror in the green room collapsed a month after it was reopened. Before that on July 17, 2023, the roof of the open auditorium of the Kala Academy had collapsed.
The Kala Academy, founded in 1970 and designed by architect Charles Correa, has become the state’s most important hub for art and culture.
The Goa government was under fire for allegedly violating the CPWD manual by renovating Kala Academy without issuing a tender, a project that cost Rs 49 crore. The remodelling process took nearly three years to complete.
Govind Gaude, the minister of art and culture, defended the state government’s decision to choose a contractor for the refurbishment project without holding a tender, pointing out that not even Shah Jahan requested bids to build the Taj Mahal.
