BENGALURU: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has said the State Government will address the remaining legal hurdles in the Mahadayi project before proceeding further, reaffirming its commitment to the long-pending river diversion scheme.
Addressing a meeting of Union Ministers and Members of Parliament from Karnataka, Shivakumar said the government would hold further consultations with senior advocates to remove the legal obstacles and take appropriate action thereafter.
The Chief Minister said the State remains committed to securing Karnataka’s water needs and is pursuing all necessary legal and administrative measures to advance the Mahadayi project.
Shivakumar also highlighted developments in other major water-related matters. Referring to the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project, he said the Supreme Court has ruled that Karnataka does not require the consent of any other State to construct a balancing reservoir within its own territory. He thanked the Union Jal Shakti Minister for reiterating Karnataka’s position in the Rajya Sabha.
He further said the Supreme Court has decided to constitute a special Bench to facilitate the resolution of issues related to the Gazette notification of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal’s water-sharing award.
Calling for political unity, the Chief Minister urged all Members of Parliament from Karnataka to work together to secure the Union Government’s approval for key pending projects and protect the State’s long-term water security.
