CANACONA: The ill-fated and killer Well that led to the death of two Petrol Pump Attendants a fortnight ago, is now a thing of the past after the Fuel Station Owner buried and Sealed levelling it to the ground on Wednesday.
The Well, from which water was pumped for the usage of the Petrol Pump was located at the adjacent and in very close proximity of the Underground Fuel Storage Tanks and the Fuel Dispensers. Two Pump Attendants (Nami B Gaonkar(43) of Gulem(Canacona) Barkelo N Gaonkar (40) of Gokuldem(Quepem) who had entered the Well to remove a Dead Turtle lying inside the Well, had collapsed and drowned into the Well on the fateful late evening of 13th Oct.
There was huge commotion and angry people evne damaged the pump house(office) in anger and retailiation of the unfortunate deaths, which subsequently died-down after the pump owner reportedly agreed for compensation to the families of both the deceased.
With many suspecting release of some unknown poisonous gas into the Well (due to its close proximity to the underground fuel tanks) has caused the death of the two and the death of Turtle/Fish occurred earlier I nthe Well, the post-mortem report came as the cause of death as Drowning.
After the shocking incident, the Pump Station remained closed for a week’s time, causing undue hardships to Canacona and Highway motorists as this pump/Fuel-Station is the only one in the entire Municipal area.
It is reportedly learnt that the Oil Company (Hindustan Petroleum) had advised to close the Well existing in close proximity of the Fuel Station, after which the pump owner took the decision to bury the Well and level the ground, added sources.
