PANAJI: The Old Goa Police have registered an FIR against two Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) contractors holding them responsible for the death of a labourer during the ongoing works in Ribandar area.
The accused contractor, Manikandan, and site supervisor, Nissanth Kumar, were both charged with causing death by negligence under Sections 304A read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code after Goa police had taken the statements of eyewitnesses.
28-year-old labourer Angat Kumar died on Monday after getting trapped in a trench dug up to lay a sewerage pipeline under Smart City works near the Divar ferry wharf in Ribandar.
The police said the accused acted in a negligent manner by not providing safety gears, adding that the accused did not take precautionary measures but asked Kumar to level the mud inside the deep and narrow trench.
The labourer was rushed to the GMC, Bambolim, where he was pronounced dead, the police said.
According to one eyewitness account the worker fell into the trench and the excavated mud and rubble began collapsing over him.
