SANGUEM: A labourer was electrocuted to death and four others sustained injuries while erecting an electricity pole at Xelpem, Sanguem, after they allegedly came in contact with a live high-tension power line. Sanguem Police have registered a case against a Junior Engineer of the Electricity Department and a contractor for alleged negligence.
According to the complaint filed by PSI Krishnadeep Borkar of Sanguem Police Station, the incident occurred on July 25 at around 4 pm during the installation of an electricity pole.
Police alleged that contractor Nardev Singh and Junior Engineer Akshay Rekdo of the Electricity Department had engaged a team of labourers for the work. The Executive Engineer had allegedly deployed the Junior Engineer to supervise the operation and ensure that the power supply to the high-tension line was switched off before the work commenced.
However, police alleged that the electricity supply was not disconnected and the work was not properly supervised. During the installation, labourer Manoj Kumar Mahato, a native of Jharkhand, allegedly came into contact with the live high-tension wire, suffered a severe electric shock and later succumbed to his injuries.
Four other labourers—Saijeet Naik of Ponda, Dhaneshwar Chintaman Mahato and Yugal Buddahan Mahato, both natives of Jharkhand, and Sunil Singh of Madhya Pradesh—also sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Police have alleged that the Junior Engineer and the contractor acted negligently and endangered the lives and safety of the workers, resulting in one death and injuries to four others.
Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Krishnadeep Borkar of Sanguem Police Station.
