BAMBOLIM: Modern Endovenous Laser Technology (EVLT) has been introduced by Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim, to treat varicose veins.
GMC Dean Dr. Shivanand Bandekar noted that the disease known as varicose veins affects 20–25% of adult Goans. He also mentioned that patients can now receive free treatment at the GMC, valued at between Rs. 70,000 and Rs. one lakh.
Dr. Bandekar reports that 24 patients have utilised the new treatment facility thus far. The procedure known as laser ablation is a daycare that allows the patient to walk after two hours because it is a non-invasive surgical procedure. The following day, the patient can resume work.
“Vein walls weakening leads to varicose veins. The vein’s weakened walls permit the vein to enlarge as blood pressure inside it rises. The vein’s valves, which keep blood flowing in a single direction, become less functional as the vein stretches,” he added.
Slow-moving blood accumulates or backs up in the vein, causing it to expand, twist, and swell. It typically affects people with hereditary syndrome who work in long-term professions like bus conductors, teachers, chefs, surgeons, etc.
According to Bandekar, this treatment is being provided by the GMCH’s Department of Interventional Radiology.
At the GMCH, varicose vein disease was previously treated with invasive surgery, which is frequently uncomfortable and may require several days in the hospital for healing.
