CANACONA: The strong and gusty winds late Monday night, have caused severe damages to property, while throwing the entire Canacona taluka in darkness throughout the night.
Canacona fire services were kept on their toes throughout Tuesday beginning late Monday night as the fire-station was goaded with as many as over 20 calls of damages due to tree-falling on houses, vehicles, electricity alignments, causing Road-blockades, etc.
With the temperatures soaring up throughout Monday, light-to-moderate lightnings with unnoticeable thundering began to illuminate the dusky skies past the Sunset, only to escalate past 10 pm with strong and gusty winds with strong thundering and lightning created a havoc of sorts in the coastal Canacona.
Electricity disappeared within minutes, as cyclonic winds began to pound causing panic amongst the residents as large sounds of breaking-down and uprooting of trees, hissing sounds of the winds terrorized the localities.
Banana plantations were worst effected, as raw and tender mangoes, Coconuts almost rained in most coastal vicinities of Canacona. Trees , including Coconut trees came tumbling down , some falling on houses, vehciles, electricity wires and roads.
Fire Services were jammned with calls, as 12 calls alone were received on Monday night itself, and many other calls beginning the wee hours of Tuesday kept the fire personnel on their toes throughout.A tree came on a house at Colomb, while in two different incidents, two vehicles (Tourists Cars) were demaged after trees fell on them at two different spots at Palolem.
Losses were yet to ansertained. A tree fell on the road at Sheller, while another tree came tumbling on the compound wall at Nagorcem caujsing a losses , A tree came on house and Vehicle at Palollem, where losses were not yet estimated, while another tree came on life electricity wire brining it down on the road at Navodaya School, Mastimoll.
A tree came down on a house at Rajbag, causing loses of over 15 K, but timely arrival of Fire services saved over 75 thousands.
According to Canacona Electricity Assistant Engineer, Govind Bhat, the heavily affected areas are the coastal line of Agonda, Palolem, Ourem,Patnem,Shiroti- Khola, where over 11 electricity poles are damaged destroying or snapping the alignment as well. ‘Damages were to the tune of over Rs.15 lakhs’, Bhat who is personally supervising the restoration works at Palolem informed.
The power supply was however partly restored at Agonda by 5 am, only to be snapped shortly later, and restored yet again, while electricity staff is working without break in atleast three different areas to restore the supply.
