CANDOLIM: Candolim Village Panchayat body held an inspection to look into the suspected illegal building of the Shambhala resort in Candolim’s No Development Zone.
According to the authorities, the facility violates the CRZ regulations since it is built on sand dunes, which are crucial in preventing natural disasters like tsunamis.
The Shambala resort once went by a different name. The resort to CCF has drawn criticism from the locals.
After receiving the complaint, the authorities demolished the illegally constructed structure and the swimming pool. In the end, the resort was closed for a whole year.
Locals noticed that the resort had been reconstructed and given a new name this time. The natural plants that grow here have been abandoned, and the resort owner also built his building on sand dunes. These plants and sand dunes protect against erosion and other natural disasters like tsunamis.
The resort owner claimed that the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) had granted them approval to erect the building. The people want to know how GCZMA can authorize the construction of a building in the No Development Zone, and they have filed a lawsuit to that effect.
Additionally, they have appealed and filed Public Interest Litigations (PILs), arguing that these kinds of actions must end. The residents of Candolim have asked the tourism authorities to investigate and act against the unlawful intrusion.
