New Delhi: Delhi was placed on high alert on Friday after multiple bomb threats were reported across the National Capital Region, just a day before Independence Day celebrations. The threats targeted several prominent locations, including Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 3, the Red Fort, Delhi High Court and multiple government offices.
According to officials, bomb threat calls were also received at Jam Nagar House, Jhandewalan Building, MB Saket Office, the District Magistrate’s Office and the SDM Office in Delhi Cantonment. Fire tenders, bomb disposal squads and police teams were immediately deployed as precautionary measures, while thorough searches were carried out at all affected locations.
Preliminary inspections have not found any suspicious objects, and authorities are continuing to verify the credibility of the threats.
The Delhi High Court separately received a threatening email warning of a bomb blast on its premises at 2:11 pm on August 15. The message also claimed that explosions would occur at district courts an hour later and made threats referencing Delhi Metro routes and trains arriving from Ambala, along with mentions of Khalistan and the 1984 anti Sikh riots. Security agencies are investigating the origin of the email.
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to address the nation from the Red Fort on Independence Day, security has been significantly intensified across Delhi and the NCR. Police personnel have been deployed at key public locations, including India Gate, Connaught Place, IGI Airport, New Delhi Railway Station and other high footfall areas.
In neighbouring Gurugram, around 4,500 police personnel have been deployed, with 11 major checkpoints established to monitor traffic, VIP routes, parking areas and other sensitive locations. Authorities say surveillance and security arrangements will remain heightened throughout the Independence Day celebrations to ensure public safety.
