PANAJI: Leader of Opposition (LoP) Yuri Alemao today has written to the Goa Environment Impact Assessment Authority (GSIAA) demanding their intervention for necessary action against all the industrial units polluting Cuncolim industrial estate leading to a major health hazard.
“High level of Pollution in Cuncolim Industrial Estate is a major health hazard for local residents. Despite repeated complaints, and media reports exposing the water & air pollution, Authorities have turned a blind eye and allowed polluting units to continue with their operations,’ said Alemao.
He further has appealed to GSIAA to take serious cognizance of the written complaint filed before them today and act by taking stringent action against all polluting units. He has hoped the Authority will not compel us to protest, which may result in a law and order issue.
“There is Water and Air Pollution in Cuncolim Industrial Estate, as various Units are not adhering to the guidelines of the Goa State Pollution Control Board and other Authorities. I have concrete information of some Units operating in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate without Environmental Clearances/Consent to Operate and do not have requisite permissions from various Authorities,” he said.
Alemao said that one such case of M/s. Orange Fox Steel Pvt. Ltd. is operating without Environmental Clearance and causing loss to the State Exchequer.
“There are similar Units in the Cuncolim industrial Estate which are illegally operating and doing production beyond the capacity stated in the Consent to Operate. I would also like to bring to your notice the Pollution caused due to various Fish Mills in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate,” LoP said.
He said that the rise in Pollution Levels has become a Health Hazard for the local residents and that the Authorities have turned a blind eye to various complaints lodged against the polluting units. If the Authorities continue to neglect the Pollution issue faced by the people, it may result in Public Protests causing Law and Order problems.
Alemao has requested GSIAA to take serious note of the issues highlighted by me and take immediate steps to stop the Pollution and also strictly act against the Industrial Units responsible for causing Pollution.
