PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today has assured to look into the matter wherein water tankers had been transporting sewage.
Chief Minister was replying to the question raised by Leader of Opposition (LoP) Yuri Alemao.
“Water Tankers have been transporting Sewage. Government has no mechanism to monitor Water Tankers carrying Sewage,” said Alemao.
Alemao said that incidents of water tankers carrying sewage were caught red-handed by people.
“But the FDA is shying away from their responsibilities. It is surprising that officers clearly admitted that their department is not aware of such incidents,” he added.
Responding, CM assured us to look into the matter.
Speaking further, CM said that the Margao Sewerage Scheme was commissioned in the year 1988-89 with 7.5 MLD STP at Shirvodem.
“Over the year sewer network was expanded with an increase in development in and around Margao City. The 7.5 MLD STP was inadequate to handle increased sewage load and hence two new STPs were taken up for construction (20 MLD & 6.7 MLD),” he added.
Sawant said that the Old STP was discarded after the commissioning of said two new STPs on the same premises in the year 2017.
Due to incessant rains in the last few days (131.2 mm in the last 24 hours) most of the areas in Margao especially low-lying areas already submerged and the ground water level has already increased.
Due to flooding the rain water is entering in manholes and chambers, inside the houses colonies which are located in low-lying and water-logged areas.
The precautionary maintenance before monsoons such as reading. desilting and flushing of manholes and sewer lines was carried out in May 2024.
“The total wastewater including infiltration of rainwater received in both STPs is 41 MLD against the capacity of 26.7MLD. In view of the above additional 20 MID is proposed by revamping 7.5 MLD STP at Shirvodem (Margao),” he said.
