CANACONA: A couple had a miraculous escape after their Jeep, luckily, hung onto the side concrete railings of Dumane Bridge on Canacona-Agonda road in the wee/early hours of Thursday.
Both the occupants had to jump out of the Jeep at significant risk of falling down the rivulet/gorge, even as the jeep with a burst right side front tie hung on to the broken concrete railings of the culvert bridge at Dumane.
According to sources, the Jeep with registration no.HP 39E 3308 coming from Agonda, was heading towards Canacona/Palolem when just before reaching out onto the Culvert Bridge at the steep turn at Dumane, the jeep going over the ditch hit the side concrete railing and got its front tyres trapped, saving it from the fall. The driver reportedly blamed the burst tyre for the mishap.
Sources further informed that the couple realised their danger came out from the jeep with great difficulty and told their hotel (where they were staying).
Later in the day, the jeep was pulled to safety after requisitioning a mini-crane.
It may be recalled that the Dumane bridge, due to its steep turn, is often in the news for vehicles going over the ditch. The mishaps have, however, been reduced after PWD came up with Speakbreakers/humps on either side of the channel and erected Concrete slab railings over the culvert.
