New Delhi: World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen has backed Javokhir Sindarov as the favourite ahead of the upcoming World Chess Championship clash against defending champion D Gukesh, while urging the Indian star to approach the match without the pressure of defending his title.
Gukesh will face Uzbekistan’s Sindarov in the World Chess Championship in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 24 to December 12.
Carlsen believes the word “defend” itself could create unnecessary pressure for Gukesh. Instead, he feels the Indian grandmaster should approach the contest with the mindset that he has everything to gain.
According to Carlsen, Gukesh has already demonstrated his ability to perform at an exceptionally high level, particularly during his breakthrough year in 2024. He believes the challenge now is for Gukesh to rediscover that level of confidence and performance against Sindarov.
Carlsen also highlighted the psychological side of a World Championship match. He suggested that an early advantage for either player could have a major impact on the contest. If Sindarov takes the lead early, Gukesh could face significant pressure, while an early advantage for the Indian could quickly shift the balance in his favour.
The Norwegian also believes Gukesh must be proactive from the opening stages rather than allowing Sindarov to dictate the match.
Meanwhile, Carlsen discussed his own future in competitive chess and reiterated his preference for faster formats over classical chess. He said becoming a father further strengthened his decision not to return to the classical World Championship.
Despite stepping away from the title race, Carlsen said he still loves competitive chess and has no intention of completely walking away from the game.
