PANAJI: In a 2019 case involving their sibling’s death during a property dispute, the Principal District and Sessions Court, North Goa, sentenced a murder convict to life in prison and his brother to prison for culpable homicide.
Case details state that two Mapusa residents, Dnyaneshwar alias Gangadhar Kerkar (aged 50) and Vinod (aged 62), fatally injured their 32-year-old brother Vilas by attacking him with a large PVC pipe and wooden danda.
When the complainant’s sister Geeta tried to break up the fight, both accused pushed her violently to the ground, hurting her. In addition, the accused threatened to harm their neighbors if they attempted to save the injured.
The case, which was looked into and chargesheeted by Police Inspector Tushar Lotliker, the Investigating Officer, also mentioned the brothers’ frequent fights. It was also discovered that Vilas had reported the two brothers to the police four months prior to the murder for fighting after drinking.
The court found both defendants guilty on Friday, sentencing the first to life in prison for murder and the second to serve his existing sentence under IPC 304(ii).
