PANAJI: Drishti Lifesavers rescued 14 fishermen from a fishing boat that capsized between Colva and Majorda coast.
According to information from a local fisherman, a boat on board 14 fishermen capsized somewhere between the Colva and Majorda coast, after which the Lifesavers sprung into action.
A team of 16 lifesavers were in the water for a search and rescue operation. The operation was successful, and all the fishermen were out of danger.
“At approximately 2130 hrs, the Lifesavers received a message from a local fisherman that a boat with at least 10 on board had capsized between the Colva-Majorda stretch. Deputy Manager Lifesaving Shashikant called in his team, who reached Colva immediately and began search operations,” Drishti said.
Further, it stated in dark and choppy sea conditions, by 2200 hrs, the location of the capsized boat had been traced, and two jetskis from Velsao and Colva were launched.
“Meanwhile, more lifesavers were called in as well as 2 lifesaving jeeps with oxygen, first aid kits were put on standby. By 2300 hrs in all, 14 fishermen were rescued and brought to shore by the team of more than 20 Lifesavers in the darkness of the night. After the preliminary checkup and first aid, all were found okay and safe,” Drishti said.

Over the weekend, Drishti’s lifesavers conducted a triple rescue at Varca beach involving males aged 26, 30 and 34 years hailing from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
In similar incidents, a double and triple rescue was conducted at Benaulim beach, involving fishing boats.
Goa’s annual fishing ban ends on July 31 each year. The fishing season has commenced in the state from August 1, 2021.
