MORMUGAO: With the monsoon season fast approaching, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has issued an urgent appeal to residents living in areas identified as highly susceptible to landslides and waterlogging.
The civic body has called for the immediate evacuation of these zones as a precautionary measure to prevent potential loss of life and property.
These areas have been classified as high-risk zones** due to past incidents of landslides, severe waterlogging, and unstable terrain.
The civic authorities have stated that multiple notices have already been issued to households residing in these regions over recent years, warning them of the dangers and urging them to shift to safer locations.
Despite repeated advisories, the MMC observed that some families continue to inhabit structures that have been officially marked as unsafe.
These buildings, particularly those situated on hillsides and low-lying coastal areas, pose a serious threat during heavy rainfall, which could trigger landslides or dangerous flooding.
MMC Commissioner reiterated that this evacuation appeal must be taken seriously, and urged residents to **vacate their premises along with essential belongings.
“We are appealing in the interest of public safety. The risk is real, and we urge people not to take chances,” a senior official said.
Furthermore, the Council has warned that residents who choose to remain in these hazardous zones will be doing so at their own risk.
It added that under prevailing laws, **further action may be taken without any additional notice, including forced eviction or sealing of unsafe structures.
The civic body is coordinating with disaster management teams and local law enforcement to facilitate a smooth evacuation process and provide support wherever necessary.
It is also in the process of identifying temporary shelters and relocation support for affected families.
The MMC’s appeal underscores the importance of preparedness and proactive safety measures during the monsoon season, especially in a region that has witnessed serious rain-related incidents in the past.
Officials are urging the public to cooperate fully and prioritize safety over convenience.
