VASCO: Mormugao Port Authority (MPA), on the occasion of World Environment Day, announced 5 necessary measures under the “Harit Sagar ” program
MPA Chairman Dr N Vinodkumar also said that the JSW would take up a dome structure in the port to curb coal pollution
“The ports worldwide are taking environment-friendly measures, and we will do the same. The central Government has already launched the Harit Sagar policy, a green port initiative to achieve climate goals. We will have five initiatives under the Harit Sagar Program to curb pollution and achieve Climate Goals,” said Dr Vinodkumar
“We will have a plantation of 5000 trees to develop a green belt in and around the port. We will use treated water from the Goa sewerage department for dust control measures. We will install a 3 MW Solar plant and have enhanced monitoring of Environment quality parameters. We also have a covered shed for coal handling by the JSW unit at the port. Our Minster Shripad Naik will announce these initiatives, and we will try to complete these initiatives before the next environment day,” Said Dr Vinodkumar
” We will stress using renewable energy and also take steps to curb Pollution. The dome structure is being taken up under the PPP model by the JSW, handling coal in the port. JSW will be investing Rs 180 crores for this project, which will be completed by 2025, and this will further reduce pollution. ” said Dr Vinodkumar.
” Port limits are not the local order of the MPA but of the central government and Ministry of Ports. Based on available records, the Jurisdiction of the MPA has been put in the public domain and published in the Gazette, and no local decision has been made on this subject. The port has been in existence since 1885, and I don’t think the port has taken any steps against the fishermen or the local community because the port is here for the development of the region and its people,” said Dr Vinodkumar.
