New Delhi: As fresh diplomatic talks draw closer, Iran has sent a sharp message to the United States, making it clear that it will not engage in negotiations under pressure. The statement comes amid growing uncertainty over whether the next round of discussions will proceed as planned.
Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, emphasised that dialogue cannot take place under threats or coercion. In a remark that echoed the famous opening line of Pride and Prejudice, he stated that a nation with a long and significant civilisation would not negotiate under force. The comment was widely interpreted as a direct response to recent warnings issued by Washington.
The statement followed remarks by US President Donald Trump, who cautioned that failure to reach an agreement before the ceasefire deadline could lead to renewed hostilities. His warning has added pressure on both sides as they attempt to navigate key differences.
Uncertainty continues to surround the proposed talks in Pakistan. While the US has indicated readiness to participate, Iran has expressed reservations, particularly after the seizure of an Iranian flagged vessel near the Strait of Hormuz. Officials in Tehran have signalled that participation is still under consideration, with no final decision announced.
The two countries are approaching the negotiations with differing priorities. Washington is focused on maintaining stability in global energy markets and preventing further escalation, while also insisting on limits to Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Tehran, meanwhile, is seeking relief from sanctions and assurances against renewed conflict, while aiming to retain its strategic leverage in the region.
Despite the tensions, there are indications that diplomatic engagement may still continue. With the ceasefire nearing its end, the coming days are expected to play a decisive role in determining whether talks move forward and whether a breakthrough can be achieved.
