PANAJI: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant effectively put an end to any possibility of Konkani being used in Romi script in government and educational institutions.
In response to inquiries regarding the status of Romi Konkani in governmental and educational settings, Sawant affirmed that the state’s official language for all purposes is Konkani written in Devanagari script, as per the Official Language Act of 1987. Additionally, Marathi is utilized in official contexts.
The Chief Minister went on to say that the Advisory Board of the Official Language Cell has not recommended to the government that Konkani be written in Romi script and used in government offices.
The usage of Konkani in Romi script in government and educational institutions was effectively stopped by Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant.
In answer to questions about Romi Konkani’s standing in the administration and in schools, Sawant stated that, in accordance with the Official Language Act of 1987, Konkani written in Devanagari script is the state’s official language for all purposes. Furthermore, Marathi is used in formal settings.
The Chief Minister continued by stating that the government has not received a recommendation from the Advisory Board of the Official Language Cell to write Konkani in Romi script and utilize it in government offices.
