PONDA: Ponda JMFC has sent Sahil Naik, the accused arrested for allegedly spreading religious hatred against the Islam community to judicial custody.
“JMFC Ponda Court has send Sahil Naik to judicial custody. Additional investigation is on in the matter,” sources from police department said.
The Cyber Crime Cell of the Goa Police on Wednesday had detained Sahil Naik, a local resident who is thought to be one of the main perpetrators of the entire controversy, which has sparked a significant amount of debate within the State, in another significant development in the case of objectionable religious posts on social media.
The officer, who remained anonymous, said that the suspect’s family has said that the young man has been receiving some sort of “mental treatment.”
“This treatment’s nature is still being researched. The family is claiming that he needs mental health therapy, but we are unsure of the specifics, he said.
He said that Cyber police were investigating the case and it was a big challenge for them to liaison with social media companies, as they are having servers in foreign countries, to get details.
The officer added that the Cyber Cell has been working diligently on this case with help from the Ponda and Margao police, noting that it was a difficult task that required constant communication with social media companies and monitoring the spread of such provocative accounts and content.
He said that the investigation is in the preliminary stage and police will find out how many accounts were created and persons involved in it.
On September 30, tension prevailed in some parts of Goa after some persons allegedly posted defamatory messages on social media which hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community.
Muslim organisations had filed police complaints in Panaji, Margao, Ponda, Mapusa, in this connection.
Subsequently FIRs were registered in Ponda and Margao police stations in South Goa
