DELHI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who was facing critic over his decision to rebuild the temples destroyed by Portuguese, today said that the only idea behind the decision is to preserve culture.
CM Sawant was addressing the gathering at Media Mahamanthan Conclave in New Delhi.
“What is wrong in re-building the temples destroyed by various rulers in ancient time. The only idea behind the decision is to preserve culture,” said CM Sawant
He further said that temples damaged by Portuguese should be reconstructed, budgetary allocation for the same has already been done.
“Our places of worship are symbols of our rich cultural heritage. At many places in Goa, we find several temples in a dilapidated and neglected condition. During the Portuguese regime, there was a systematic effort to destroy these cultural centres. Considering tourism development, we have made a provision of Rs 20 crore for reconstruction and restoration of these temples and sites,” Sawant had said his budgetary speech.
Earlier this month, Sawant had also asked the people of the state, especially the temple trusts in villages, to be vigilant about religious conversions.
Speaking on fuel prices, Sawant said that reduction in fuel prices is very welcome as it will common man.
“This is 2nd such decision in 3 months. Last time, all BJP ruled states further reduced prices. This time, other party ruled states should think about this,” he added
