PORVORIM: The Opposition today intensified its pressure on the government over the National Games controversy, while demanding a high level investigation led by a retired High Court judge into the appointment of a strategic partner.
MLA Capt Venzy Viegas questioned the government as why a strategic partner was appointed during National Games spending crores.
“I demands high level inquiry under retired High Court judge in matter of appointment to strategic partner during National Games. The Min is unable to answer my questions,” said Viegas.
Sports Minister Govind Gaude revealed that Rs 573 cr expenditure on sports infrastructure since 2014, including Lusofonia Games infra was done. He also said that Rs 445 cr utilized for National Games organization.

Venzy Viegas took Gaude to task for uploading the answer to the star-studded question posed to the Sports Minister on the website 20 hours ago. Gaude replied that he had changed the answer as there was an improvement in it.
Viegas asked the question about the various expenses incurred for the sports event. Information about the expenditure incurred for publicity and promotion of the competition was sought.
Also, he demanded an inquiry under the chairmanship of a retired judge into the Rs 23 crore expenditure incurred on publicity.
Opposition leader Yuri Alemao demanded an inquiry into the cost of painting the Nehru Maidan in the wake of the sports tournament.
“The Rs 60 crore repair tender for the ground floated in 2013-2014 also included the cost of painting” he added.
Alemao also raised the question why so much was spent for it again. At this time, Alemao alleged that the government is behaving like a king.
Also, it was said in the hall that Rs 23 crore was spent on the publicity of the tournament and Rs 5.3 crore on advertisement.
Meanwhile, Sports Minister Gaude said that the expenditure of Rs 573 crore which the opposition is presenting has been done since 2014.
