Canacona: Picnics are turning tragic as Canacona has reported two drowning deaths in less than a month when two youths who had gone for picnic lost their lives by drowning.
In the first instance a middle aged youth married having kids from Loliem lost his life while coming from a fishing trip with his friends in neighbouring Karwar taluka, it is reported that he drowned while the group who had gone with him for fishing on an island at Mazali were walking to the main land through waters as the boat which was supposed to bring them didn’t turn up.
His body was later retrieved the next day.
Last week another middle aged youth again from Loliem village had gone for a picnic with his family, lost his life after he was unknowingly caught in the rough water currents at the mouth of the Galgibagha-Mashem river.
Both of these youth were recently married and have kids and it’s a disaster befallen on their families as both the youths were the only bread earners in their respective.
While the first drowning death happened outside Goa but the second death happened in Goa and could have been avoided if authorities had to install a board warning people not to venture into the waters at the mouth of Galgibagh-Mashem river locals from here feel.
Santan Xavier Costa a former panch and social worker from Mashem speaking with this correspondent informed that it’s tragic that two youths lost their lives but still the authorities have not woken up and they will wake up only when there is a public uproar which has become a normal trend for the authorities he said.
The news of the death of the Mashem youth last week was reported in the mainstream media and the authorities responsible must surely have read about it, but no responsible officer or department has made any effort in visiting the spot where the boy drowned nor they visited those who were present when the boy drowned to ask how he drowned Costa lamented.
“There are many unreported instances where in many were saved from drowning at this place, it’s so dangerous to even enter the water here as the depth suddenly increases and the fast flowing ‘not to be seen by a naked eye’ currents pull whoever enters the waters, the authorities whoever they are should erect sign boards warning picnickers to avoid entering the waters here” Costa informed.
“Its imperative that the authorities map the beaches by using drones to check for the behaviour of water currents and on the basis of that the picnickers should be advised accordingly by installing sign boards” inferred Costa.
“This is part of Galgibagh beach, its beyond anybodies imaginations that why and how come a life guard is not deployed here asked Costa.
Manoj Prabhugaonkar a social activist living close by informed that every day he sees families coming at the Galgibagha-Mashem river mouth for picnics, even if locals tell them not to enter the waters here they don’t listen.
“People from far off places, even from Karwar come here for merry making, its important to install a board informing of the dangers ahead in the water as well as there should be a life guard deployed here to strictly disallow people from entering the waters here, otherwise there will be more deaths” Prabhugaonkar warned.
