Ayodhya: The investigation into the alleged embezzlement of Ram Temple donations has widened, with police now examining the assets, property purchases and financial transactions of key accused Anukalp Mishra, officials said.
Investigators suspect that Anukalp, who was part of the outsourced team responsible for counting cash donations at the temple, may have played a central role in diverting funds meant for temple offerings. Authorities are now trying to trace whether his reported rise in wealth is linked to the alleged misappropriation.
Police sources said multiple high-value assets, including a farmhouse on the outskirts of the village, a recently purchased house in Ayodhya worth around ₹65 lakh, and a Mahindra Scorpio SUV under consideration, are being verified as part of the probe.
Officials also visited his native Basawa village, where residents reportedly told investigators that his family’s financial status had improved significantly in recent years. The probe is also examining a seven-day religious programme allegedly organised by him, including its funding and expenditure.
Investigators have further alleged that Anukalp arranged for his brother-in-law, Lavkush Mishra, to join the same donation-counting team through an outsourcing agency. Both are among the eight individuals arrested so far in the case.
Lavkush’s financial records are also under scrutiny, with police verifying reports of a recent motorcycle purchase despite reportedly modest living conditions. Authorities are examining whether assets acquired by the accused are disproportionate to their known sources of income.
The financial probe includes detailed analysis of bank accounts, property records, investments and spending patterns of all eight arrested individuals to determine if proceeds from alleged donation theft were converted into movable or immovable assets.
The accused, including former staff and associates linked to donation handling at the Ram Temple trust system, were arrested after an FIR was registered over alleged theft and misappropriation of cash and valuables. Police said further arrests cannot be ruled out as the investigation continues.
