PANAJI: Traffic management measures are set to be rolled out along the Porvorim corridor, with authorities agreeing in principle to three access arrangements while deploying traffic personnel on the Merces–Panaji route to tackle congestion.
The decisions were taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and attended by senior officials and experts from IIT Kharagpur.
PWD Minister Digambar Kamat said three access arrangements for Porvorim have been agreed upon in principle. These include one entry and one exit for the corridor, along with a separate entry for Porvorim residents to access the Atal Setu.
Kamat clarified that the proposed arrangements would not involve making additional cuts or punctures in the newly constructed corridor.
As part of the traffic-control plan, traffic signals, speed breakers, rumblers, cameras and large advance signboards will be installed at identified locations. The signboards will alert motorists about speed restrictions and upcoming access points well in advance.
Authorities will also undertake lane-merging measures and other traffic-management requirements. Kamat pointed out that although the Porvorim corridor has three lanes, the carriageway narrows to two lanes towards Merces, making additional traffic-control measures necessary.
The implementation work is expected to begin within the next day or two and is likely to become operational this week.
Meanwhile, SP Traffic Prabhod Shirvoikar said traffic personnel have already been deployed along the Merces–Panaji route to regulate traffic movement and manage congestion.
