CANACONA: Preparations are in full swing for the celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, which will also be observed as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas on November 13.
A grand procession is being planned in Canacona taluka to mark the occasion. A key preparatory meeting chaired by Minister for Tribal Welfare, Sports & Youth Affairs, and Art & Culture Ramesh Tawadkar was held on Saturday to finalize arrangements.
Tawadkar said the Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas is celebrated across the country to honour the life and legacy of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, whose struggle against injustice and oppression made him a national icon.
“In Goa too, the procession will witness participation from both tribal and non-tribal communities, symbolizing unity, equality, and shared national pride,” Tawadkar said.
Around 10,000 participants, including nearly 6,000 women, are expected to take part in the event. Various youth groups, cultural organizations, and social institutions will join the procession to spread the message of unity, harmony, and patriotism.
The meeting was attended by Shristhal Sarpanch Sejal Gaonkar, Khotigao Sarpanch Vrunda Velip, Agonda Sarpanch Nilesh Pagi, Adarsh Yuva Sangh President Chandrakant Velip, and several panchayat members, municipal councillors, representatives of social organizations, and local leaders.
“Bhagwan Birsa Munda is not only an icon of the tribal community but an inspiration for the entire nation. He fought fearlessly against injustice and became a symbol of dignity, freedom, and resistance. His legacy continues to inspire every section of society to uphold unity and self-respect,” Tawadkar added.
