CANACONA: Ms Prettal Sweezel Fernandes became the youngest Sarpanch of Village Panchayat Agonda.
Preetal was elected unanimously in the 7-member Village Panchayat of Agonda on Friday in the vacancy created by the resignation of outgoing Sarpanch Fatima Rodrigues.
As the deadline for receipt of nominations ended, Prettal’s was the only nomination received and accepted by presiding officer Pradip H Gaude (E.O.VP % BDO, Canacona). After the due procedure and in the presence of all the panch members, including outgoing Sarpanch Fatima Rodrigues and Panchayat Secretary Amol Naikgaunkar, presiding officer Gaude declared Ms Prettal Sweezel Fernandes elected as Sarpanch of Village Panchayat Agonda is unopposed.
It may be recalled that, soon after the last panchayat elections, Rodrigues was elected unopposed through a five-member group that owed allegiance to Canacona MLA and GLA Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar. As various issues were taken up, and more importantly, a demolition order of 78 houses in Canacona Communidade land at Agonda became the bone of concern in the village, Rodrigues surprised everyone by submitting their resignation from the post of Sarpanch.
Fatima, however, reiterated her resignation a few months early, informed she resigned as per the previous agreement with the ruling group to rotate the post of Sarpanch.
Prettal as the youngest member of panchayat, was elected as Dy. Sarpanch of VP Agonda then, @27 had now become the youngest Sarpanch in the village.
Prettal said, though she will continue to take the developmental works ahead in cooperation and in the confidence of all 6 other panch members, she’ll give special attention to the youths in the village.’ our youth needs guidance and awareness on various aspects, I have the vision to do something for the development of youths in our Village’.
The new Sarpanch was congratulated by all the panch members, besides Ex-sarpanch and Agonda Biodiversity Management Committee Chairman Shaba Naikgaunkar and others. Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar also reached the panchayat office and, assuring all the cooperation from his end, congratulated the new Sarpanch.
Prettal later visited the St. Anne’s Church, and sought blessings of Parish Priest Fr. Patrick Louis., as several villagers also lined up to wish her.
