QUEPEM: A resident of Balli in Quepem has allegedly been cheated of ₹6.80 lakh after cyber fraudsters tricked him into downloading a fake traffic challan application through WhatsApp.
According to the complaint lodged by Alkesh Naik, the incident took place on July 13, 2026, at around 8.23 pm. Police said unknown accused contacted the complainant through WhatsApp and sent an APK file link, claiming it was for payment of a ₹1,000 traffic challan for an alleged traffic rule violation.
Believing the message to be genuine, the complainant clicked on the APK link. Soon after, a total of ₹6,80,152.73 was allegedly withdrawn from his bank account through multiple unauthorised transactions.
Based on the complaint, police have registered a case of cheating against the unidentified accused. Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Aditya Sawant of Cuncolim Police Station.
