PANAJI: The appointment of IIM Nagpur to examine issues surrounding the six-lane Porvorim elevated flyover has come under scrutiny from civic activists and former Public Works Department (PWD) engineers, who have questioned whether a technical engineering institution would have been more appropriate for the assessment.
While Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) specialise in management, administration and project-related studies, experts have pointed to institutions such as IITs and the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), which have specialised expertise in road engineering, traffic management and structural engineering.
GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martins highlighted the road-safety work already being undertaken in Goa by IIT Madras, raising questions over the need to involve an institution primarily focused on management for examining technical and safety-related aspects of the Porvorim project.
Former PWD engineers have also raised concerns over road signage, traffic management and commuter safety in the wake of the ongoing issues surrounding the elevated corridor.
