Panaji: The State Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal for for procurement of 1045 MTS of Onion from NAFED for distribution to RC beneficiaries on the backdrop of rise in prices of Onions.
Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said that there is sudden spike in the prices of onion in the State and the retail intervention by the Government has been felt necessary.
“The Cabinet approved purchase of 1045 MTS of Onion from National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) @ about Rs.28, 000/- per MT including transportation (may vary as per actual cost on the day procured, as the price is dynamic and changes daily)” the chief minister said.
He said the onions will be distributed to the Ration Card Holders @ 3 kgs per card per month at the selling rate of Rs.32 per kg (including inter-State transportation cost of Rs.1 per kg and Fair Price Shops Dealer Profit margin @ Rs.3 per kg.
The Cabinet note says that as on date there are 348194 numbers of AAY, PILI, API & ANP Ration Card Holders.
Initially to purchase 1045 MTS of Onion a 28,000 per MT from National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED), there is requirement of Rs 2,92,60,000.
“However, there will be no additional financial burden on the State Government on account of above proposal as the same will be distributed at cost to cost basis a Rs.32/- per kg (including transportation cost of Rs.1/- per kg and Fair Price Shops Dealer Profit margin @ Rs.3/- per kg) and the amount will be recovered from the beneficiaries,” the note said.
