CALANGUTE: Following the incident wherein shiv premis had damaged panchayat property Sarpanch Joseph sequeira has filed a police complaint against the attack and damaging the panchayat property
Tensions prevailed in North Goa’s Calangute after a group of 200 people surrounded panchayat office and threw stones at the office of Calangute Panchayat in Goa on Tuesday after its order to remove the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj installed on the roadside.
People holding saffron flags marched towards the Panchayat office in the morning and demanded the order be withdrawn and started throwing stones. Nobody was injured in the incident as per the preliminary information.
The Protesters demanded that the sarpanch issue a public apology for hurting their sentiments.
the protesters raised slogans and turned violent prompting heavy police deployment.
Joseph Sequeira, Calangute Sarpanch, walked out of the office, escorted by several police personnel, and issued an apology.
Joseph Sequeira, the sarpanch, said “The order has been withdrawn. If I have hurt anyone’s sentiments by issuing the notice, I apologise.”
On Monday, the Calangute panchayat had written a letter, stating that the panchayat body had unanimously passed a resolution declaring the statue as illegal and directed the authorities to remove the statue within ten days, failing which the panchayat shall take further action to remove the said statue.
